Thursday, October 30, 2025 - Tonights Class
Tonights Class

Hey everyone!

Tonight in class we will be resuming our messer lessons, potentially including a little bit of grappling.

As some of us will know, the barn hunt group that we have been renting from will be closing their building, so we are still looking for a new practice location. If you know of anywhere or anyone that may be willing to rent to us, let me know!

Tying in with this, I am aiming for us to finish our messer curriculum on the last day in the current location, November 20th. (Thanksgiving we will not be meeting). We will be starting up our new, future location with a possible footwork interstitial lead by Jay, then going into Sword and Buckler afterwards.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out here tonight!

Thursday, October 23, 2025 -

Sunday, October 12, 2025 - Choppening Clean Up Day
Choppening Clean Up Day

Hey everyone, couple of small updates for us! First one is regarding the choppening clean up date, 10/18/2025.

Secondly, I have a friend who works with a local magazine and is willing to get us a little bit of advertising in there, so we're going to be taking some additional donations to make sure that we can give them some compensation for the publicity.

Thursday, October 09, 2025 - Tonights Class - And The Choppening!
Tonights Class - And The Choppening!

Hey everyone! Tonights class we will be going through some more messer, this time going through actions from the Shielhau, and probably some extras as well.

More importantly - We are having a late announcement for this, but - we will be hosting another Choppening this year! The date is currently set for Friday, October 24th, however we will be discussing it in person to make sure that the date works for as many people as possible, so its not set in stone.

Its been a few years since we've had a Choppening, so for anyone who doesn't know, we all gather in my back yard to have a little bit of dumb fun cutting things with sharps! Popular targets include plastic bottles, pumpkins, or any produce that looks like it could do with a good chopping!

Tonight! Messer!

Todays class we will be starting our curriculum on the Messer!

For anyone who does not know what the messer is, it's a little German, one-handed, choppy sword that is an irresponsible amount of fun.

In contrast, to our normal methodology we will be looking at several smaller sources for our learning this time around. Instead of one book for several months, we are actually going to be blowing through two whole sources in less than an hour, with some of a third being thrown in.

Come on out and have some choppy fun with us tonight!

Friday, August 15, 2025 - Donnybrook Now - Messer Soon!

Thursday, June 05, 2025 -

Hey everyone, a few announcements before class!

We are changing around how we accept payments - for right now we are still taking PayPal, but we've changed the email address for it, please make any future payments to contact@mmaahema.com, not to the old Gmail.

We've made this change because i've finally attempted to get us a new card reader (coming in next week), and this required another verification step through Paypal, which was set up by Evan, who I am not - so a new paypal account.

We have added the new changes in our Website; http://www.mmaahema.com/ as well as adding in a new subscription service, so that I dont have to ask for payments every month. not sure how the subscriptions work, so they may be removed if no one likes them.

However, there is a chance that the buildings power may still be out - in that case we will meet at the park across the street! I will write a note on the door if that is the case.

This is the last class before Swordstrong, so if you want to prepare for the tournament, or you need to borrow equipment, this is a good day to be out!

Monday, March 03, 2025 - A Pair of Updates

Hey everyone! I've got two updates for us today!

The first one - This next Sunday (The 9th) is our first return to our Sunday classes! These classes are always free for everyone to join.  I would love to be able to see as many people out there as we can to try and drum up some more attention from new people!

The second update – We have a Website now - MMAAhema.com

This has been a project that I’ve been working on for a few weeks now (though for someone who knows what they’re doing, it could have taken far less), it is going to be a place for us to be able to post the updates that we normally share to our Facebook page, but now separate from the rest of the social media platform.

The website also has a calendar, where we can look at all of our classes coming up, and any other events that I get added to it.

If you can think of anything that we need to add to the website to make it more functional/less ugly, let me know, and I’ll see if I know how to fix it!

Monday, March 03, 2025 - A New Website
A New Website

Hey everyone, welcome to the first iteration of our website. It is here that we should be able to host any and all updates for everyone.

Please take note, I am not a web designer, and I only know what I’m doing about 10% of the time on all the various programs that got me here.

If you are a web designer, please feel free to give me advice, I’ll take what I can get!

Recent Updates
We are Currently Working Through: Messer!
1107 S Grant Ave    6PM - 9PM
The Medieval Military Arts Academy (MMAA) is a group of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) scholars based in Springfield, Missouri.

We are a historical fencing club and focus on studying, interpreting medieval weapons manuals and then apply what we have learned in actual sparring/combat. We study literature and weapons from the 14th-17th centuries, primarily with a focus on historical accuracy as much as practical.

We study a multitude of weapons, typically on a rotational basis with a focus on; long sword - a weapon in two hands, messer—a weapon in one hand, and sword and buckler (weapon in each hand). Additionally, we may touch on smaller courses of other weapons on a less frequent basis, such as Dagger, Spear, Saber, Ringen, ect.

Many, but not all, members participate in tournaments to test their skills and proficiency. Some members also participate in historical reenactment and other Living History events.

Joining our group is simple, all you need to do is show up to class, we can get a waiver filled out for you, and after that, you should be ready to start.

We meet every Thursday, from 6-9PM at 1107 S Grant Ave, Springfield, MO 65807

What do I need to bring with me?
The only thing you need to bring with you on your first class is yourself, we will provide all the loaner equipment that we can with one exception, that being an athletic cup for those who require one.

As far as any other gear that you might want, feel free to send us an email at contact@MMAAHema.com, post to our facebook page, Facebook.com/groups/MMAAofSpringfield, or to use the Interactive Gear Checker, at the HEMA Alliance page

During your introductory period, you are given two free months of insurance coverage through the HEMA Alliance, afterwards you will have to provide your own coverage, but since we are a HEMAA Affiliate, the cost should only be $26.00 for a year.

Do I need to Pay?
When you first start, you are given one free month, afterwards, we charge $26.00 per month for club dues (And you get a free Tee Shirt!). This goes to our space rentals, Insurance costs, and any club gear purchases we make.
We currently accept payments via cash, check, and Paypal, though if you yell at me enough I may add more payment options.
